Barriers in Communication
Although, communication seems very easy yet it is not as simple as it appears to be. Very often people found saying, “there was a communication gap”. However, question of communication gap does not arise because, what is communication, i.e. to get your message understood by the receiver. You either communicate fully to your receiver or fail to do so. There is no possibility of a gap to exist. What is normally referred, as a communication gap is failure of the sender to define the message clearly? In the want of the clarity of message when the receiver does not respond as expected by the sender, he refers it as a communication gap. This failure in communicating the message depends upon various factors, which are referred as barriers in communication.

The first barrier that we encounter while communicating is the physical barrier. The noises in the surrounding area can hamper your performance both while delivering and receiving a message. But this is not the only barrier that one encounters. There are barriers, which are created by the receiver. However, the irony is that majority of barriers are created by the sender himself. Therefore, let us understand what are these barriers, why at all these exist and how one can overcome these barriers.
The Barriers - Originating from the Receiver's side
  • Not paying attention
  • Preconceived notion about the speaker
  • Mind reading
  • Passivity
  • Selective listening
  • Interfering
The Barriers - Originating from the Sender's side
  • Message vague in sender's mind
  • Bad Timing
  • Inappropriate medium or language
  • Inappropriate voice modulation, tone, mannerism and non-verbal movements etc.
  • Too much or little
  • Aggressive or submissive
  • Relying on False assumptions
